    The Client Experience of Presence

My doctoral dissertation on the client experience of therapists being fully (or lacking) “presence.” Participants were not and are not my personal clients in therapy. Full informed consent engaged, IRB-approved, and client quotations are de-identified, confidentiality-protected.

This is a mixed-methods reflexive thematic analysis. I attempt to introspect on my experience as a researcher and potential biases. Participants seemed to express 8 themes for the client experience of presence, and three themes for the client experience of therapists lacking presence. Cultural considerations emerged in the data and are discussed.

The study is scheduled to be published in The Humanistic Psychologist (THP) in late 2026. THP is the peer-reviewed journal of Division 32 of the American Psychological Association (APA).
